Vibes

Paintings by Tim McKay

April 4th – 28th, 2024

What helps you remember who you are?

Vibes explores how both representational and abstract imagery can induce a mood of reflection and meditation. The show features new works from McKay’s Santa Monica and Complexity series, utilizing broad color fields and pattern mash-ups.

About the Santa Monica series:

At age 11 McKay moved to Santa Monica from New Jersey and lived there through his high school years. He instantly fell in love with the ocean. During summers he was at the beach many times each week. A strong swimmer, McKay was certified as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.

For McKay, the beach was a place of sensuality—the heat of the sand, the cold of the ocean, the eeriness of fog banks, the sting of a jellyfish, sensing one’s own smallness among vast waters and trillions of grains of sand. The Santa Monica series captures the personal nature of McKay’s experience at the beach through large color fields and simplified, iconic forms. In viewing the works, McKay invites others to share in the awe of the natural world and one’s place in it.

 About Tim:

Tim McKay is a Denver-based artist who works in acrylic, mixed media and ceramics. Primarily, his art is about the use of color, line, and creating meaningful interplay between organic and inorganic forms. Thematically, his work explores the intersection of random and predictable actions and is aligned with the Color Field and Constructionist/Systems movements.

McKay worked for over 20 years as a software designer, and within his practice of art applies concepts of software engineering such as scalability and user-centered design in creating a body of work with a consistent style that welcomes all viewers.  He believes in the value of art as a tool to engender moments of stillness that encourage people to connect with their thoughts and feelings in a deeper way.

Possibilities

New artwork by Lisa Calzavara

May 1st – June 2nd 2024

First and foremost I’m an artist and not good with words.  I prefer to paint what I’m feeling instead of talking or writing about it.  Last year was a struggle -after losing two family members, I began to focus inward to deal with the pain and find a way to cope.  I began to picture in my mind images of places I’d love to visit, where anything was possible.  The joy of seeing huge sunset filled skies or rivers of fast flowing water brought comfort to my soul.  And so I began to paint.

Focusing on positive feelings of joy, hope, love, or happiness, I began creating small sketches of places filled with possibilities.  The chaos and pain still existed but by focusing on that one moment, all the confusion seemed to fade away and brought me a sense of calming peace.  Color studies of vibrant hues or contrasting elements began to emerge with energetic vibrancy.  These depictions reinforced the potential for an optimistic future.  With encouragement, the larger paintings were constructed all the while keeping those positive thoughts resonating in my heart.  Now, as I look at the paintings I created, it is my hope that anyone seeing these landscapes will perceive the uplifting intentions within the shapes and structures used to create the artwork.  This concept is what has brought me purpose, happiness and confidence to continue as each painting has become a beautiful world full of possibilities where anything can happen and are out there waiting to be discovered.

In addition to “Possibilities”, other fine art will be displayed in the gallery by resident artists, including paintings, ceramics, jewelry, mixed media and sculpture. Enjoy visiting two levels of working artist open studios.
